TROLLHEIM: GNOMES is a tower defense game with a twist, and it's the kind of title that sneaks up on you. I've been playing it on my Android phone for a few weeks now, and it's a pure mobile game, so you won't find it on Steam, Xbox, or Switch. It first launched on Google Play and the App Store, and while the install count isn't in the millions yet, it's carving out a solid little niche. The best part? It's free to download and install. There are in-game purchases if you want to speed things up, usually a few dollars for gem packs, and yes, there are ads, but they're not shoved in your face every thirty seconds. You can play the whole thing without spending a dime, which is rare these days.
The way you play is pretty straightforward: you place gnome defenders along a path to stop waves of trolls and other creatures from reaching your base. What makes it click for me is the strategic depth. It's not just about spamming the strongest unit. You have to think about placement, synergy between different gnome types, and when to upgrade versus when to save up. My favorite part is definitely the boss fights. They force you to switch up your whole strategy mid-level, and the satisfaction of finally taking one down after three failed attempts is huge. It feels earned, not handed to you.
Compared to other tower defense games like Kingdom Rush or Bloons TD, TROLLHEIM: GNOMES has a more playful, almost quirky vibe. The gnome theme is charming, and the art style doesn't take itself too seriously. Kingdom Rush is more polished, sure, but it's also more expensive to get the full experience. Bloons is great, but it can get repetitive. I'd recommend this one if you want something fresh that doesn't punish you for playing free. It's a solid time-killer that respects your time and your wallet, and that's why I keep coming back to it.
Features
- Charming gnome theme 🍄: Instead of generic knights and archers, you're commanding a ragtag bunch of gnomes with personality. Each unit has its own little animations and quirks that make the battlefield feel alive, which is a nice change from the usual grimdark tower defense setups.
- Active ability system ⚡: You're not just watching towers shoot. You can trigger special abilities during waves, like a gnome mage freezing a group of enemies or a bomber lobbing explosives. This keeps you engaged and adds a skill layer that Kingdom Rush fans will appreciate.
- Fair free-to-play model 🎮: Unlike many mobile titles that wall you off after level ten, this one lets you grind for currency at a reasonable pace. The ads are optional for bonuses, and the gem prices are low enough that you don't feel forced to pay. It's a breath of fresh air compared to some greedy apps on Google Play.
Pros
- No pay-to-win walls 🚫: You can beat every level with strategy and patience. Games like Bloons TD 6 eventually push you toward microtransactions, but TROLLHEIM: GNOMES keeps the difficulty fair. I cleared the first two worlds without spending anything, and it felt great.
- Boss battles that matter 👹: These aren't just damage sponges. Each boss has unique mechanics that force you to rethink your layout. It's a highlight that similar games often overlook, and it keeps the campaign from feeling like a grind.
- Lightweight and smooth on Android 📱: The download is small, and it runs without lag even on older phones. I've had zero crashes, which is more than I can say for some bigger titles on the Play Store. Quick installs mean you can jump in during a commute.
Cons
- Limited endgame content 🔁: Once you finish the main campaign, there's not much to do besides replaying levels for higher scores. Kingdom Rush offers challenge modes and extra heroes, but this one feels a bit bare after the credits roll.
- Ad frequency can spike 📺: While mostly optional, the ads sometimes pop up between levels more often than I'd like. It's not a dealbreaker, but it breaks the flow compared to premium games like Bloons TD.
- Visual polish is uneven 🎨: Some enemy designs look a little generic compared to the gnomes. The art is charming overall, but a few backgrounds feel recycled. It's a minor gripe, but it stands out next to more polished competitors.
