Garry's Mod is a sandbox physics game built on the Source engine, and honestly it is one of the strangest and most rewarding things you can install on a PC. It first launched way back in December 2004 as a mod, then became a standalone release on Steam in November 2006. This is not a mobile game at all, so do not go looking for it on Google Play or the App Store, and there is no android version. It is PC only through Steam, and it has never officially come to Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch. The install base is massive, with millions of copies sold over the years, and it regularly sits among the most played games on Steam. You pay once, usually around ten dollars, and that is it. No in app purchases, no ads, no season passes. The only extra cost is buying other Source games like Half-Life 2 if you want their assets to show up properly, but the base game alone gives you plenty to mess with.
How you play Garry's Mod depends entirely on what you want to do. You spawn props, weld them together, pose ragdolls, build contraptions, and just see what happens when physics takes over. There are also thousands of community servers running everything from roleplay to zombie survival to prop hunt. The best part for me is the freedom. Nobody tells you what the goal is. My favorite sessions are the ones where I load an empty map, spawn a bunch of junk, and spend two hours building something stupid like a rocket-powered shopping cart. Then I hop onto a DarkRP server and laugh at the chaos with strangers. It is the kind of game where you make your own fun, and that never gets old.
Compared to similar sandbox games like Minecraft or Besiege, Garry's Mod feels way more chaotic and unpredictable. Minecraft is great but it is built around blocks and survival. Besiege is focused on engineering machines. Garry's Mod just throws the whole toolbox at you and says go nuts. The Steam Workshop support is what really separates it. You can download thousands of addons, maps, and game modes with one click, and suddenly you are playing something completely different. I recommend it over other sandbox titles because the modding community is still alive after all these years. If you like tinkering and laughing at physics glitches, this is the one to install.
Features
- Endless mod support 🧰 - The Steam Workshop has tens of thousands of addons, from new weapons to full game modes, and you just subscribe and they appear in game.
- Physics sandbox freedom 🛠️ - You can grab, weld, rope, and launch almost any object, which makes every session different from the last.
- Huge multiplayer scene 🎮 - Community servers host roleplay, prop hunt, and sandbox modes with real players, so there is always someone to mess around with.
Pros
- One purchase, no nonsense 💸 - You pay once on Steam and never see an ad or a microtransaction, unlike many modern sandbox games that nickel and dime you.
- Community keeps it alive 🔥 - The Workshop and server browser mean fresh content shows up constantly, which is something Minecraft mods can struggle to match in terms of ease.
- Perfect for creative messing about 🎨 - Whether you want to build, pose, or just break things, the tools are simple enough to learn but deep enough to sink hours into.
Cons
- Steep learning curve at first 😅 - The spawn menu and tool gun can feel overwhelming, and compared to something like Minecraft, the game does not hold your hand at all.
- Needs other Source games for full assets 📦 - Without games like Half-Life 2 installed, a lot of props and models show up as errors, which is annoying for new players.
- Server quality varies wildly 🎲 - Some community servers are great, but others lag or have toxic players, and it is not as polished an experience as a curated game like Besiege.
