So I finally got my hands on the Dead as Disco demo, and honestly, it caught me off guard in the best way. This thing is a rhythm-based action roguelike, which sounds like a mouthful, but it basically means you punch, dodge, and blast enemies to the beat of the music. Right now the demo is playable on Android through Google Play and also on PC via Steam. It's not on Xbox or Switch yet, which is a bummer for console folks. The full game hasn't launched officially, so this is a free demo download. No ads, no in-game purchases shoved in your face during the demo, which I really appreciate. When the full version drops, expect some cosmetic stuff or maybe a character pack, probably a few bucks each, but nothing crazy based on what I've seen so far. Install size is pretty small, so it won't eat your storage.
Playing it is simple to pick up but hard to master. You move through neon-soaked clubs and alleyways, and every enemy attack syncs to the soundtrack. Your job is to time your hits and dodges to the rhythm, and when you nail a combo, the screen explodes with color and the music swells. The best part for me is how the game makes you feel like you're choreographing a fight scene instead of just mashing buttons. My favorite moment was during a boss fight where the bass dropped and I landed a perfect three-hit combo that sent the guy flying into a jukebox. That rush is real. You can play with touch controls on android, but I plugged in a controller and it felt way better.
Compared to other rhythm action games like Crypt of the NecroDancer or Hi-Fi Rush, Dead as Disco feels more forgiving for casual players while still rewarding timing nerds. NecroDancer is brutal, and Hi-Fi Rush is amazing but only on PC and Xbox. This one gives you that same musical combat high but on your phone, which is huge for me since I game on the bus. I'd recommend it over something like Beat Saber if you want a story-driven experience without VR gear. The demo alone gave me a couple hours of fun, and I'm already itching for the full release.
Features
- Beat-synced combat 🎵 - Every punch, dodge, and shot lands on the beat, so fights feel like a music video instead of a button masher.
- Roguelike runs with rhythm 🎮 - Each run throws new enemy patterns and remixes, keeping you on your toes like in Hades but with a soundtrack you can groove to.
- Mobile-first design 📱 - Unlike Hi-Fi Rush, this game is built for android and feels natural on a touchscreen, though a controller is still my go-to.
Pros
- Instant rhythm feedback 🥁 - Missing a beat actually matters, but the game tells you clearly with visual cues, so you learn fast instead of rage-quitting like in Crypt of the NecroDancer.
- Stylish visuals and music 🕺 - The neon aesthetic and original tracks make every level feel alive, way more energetic than most mobile action games I've tried.
- Fair free demo 💸 - No ads or paywalls in the demo means you can actually test the gameplay before spending anything, which is rare on google play these days.
Cons
- Limited content in demo 😕 - You only get a taste of the levels and characters, so it's hard to judge long-term replay value compared to full games like Hi-Fi Rush.
- Touch controls need work 👆 - On android, swiping and tapping can feel laggy during fast sections, and I kept missing beats until I switched to a controller.
- No console version yet 🚫 - If you mainly game on Switch or Xbox, you're out of luck for now, which puts it behind other rhythm games that are everywhere.
