Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival and exploration game from Unknown Worlds Entertainment, the studio behind the original Subnautica and Natural Selection 2. If you've played the first game, you already know the genre: you dive into an alien ocean, gather resources, build bases, and try not to get eaten. As of right now, Subnautica 2 is built with Unreal Engine 5 and is planned for PC through Steam and Epic Games Store, plus Xbox Series X and S through the Microsoft Store. A PlayStation version hasn't been announced yet, and there's no confirmed Switch release either. It is not an android or mobile title at all, so don't expect to install it from google play or the App Store anytime soon. The game was originally targeted for early access in 2025, but the studio delayed it to 2026 after feedback on a build shown to players. Because it's still unreleased, there are no install numbers, no download count on any storefront, and no free-to-play model to talk about. The original Subnautica cost around 25 to 30 dollars at launch, and early access pricing for the sequel will probably land in a similar range, with no in-app ads and no microtransaction shop that we know of. You just buy the app once.
Playing Subnautica 2 works like the first game. You swim, scan, craft, and survive. You start with almost nothing, scan fragments to unlock blueprints, build a small base, and slowly push deeper into biomes that get darker and scarier the further you go. The best part for me is the sense of discovery. Nobody tells you what's down there. You poke around a wreck, hear a roar, and suddenly you're swimming for your life. My favorite moment in the original was always that first night dive with a tiny flashlight, and the sequel looks like it keeps that feeling intact while adding co-op. That's the big change this time. You can bring friends into the same world, which completely reshapes how the survival loop feels, since one person can build while another explores. The world is also bigger and the creatures are more dynamic, with some that actually hunt each other instead of just you.
Compared with other survival games like The Forest, Raft, or Grounded, Subnautica 2 stands out because it commits fully to the ocean. The other games give you land, trees, and familiar survival tropes. This one gives you pressure, oxygen limits, and creatures you can't see coming. As someone who put plenty of hours into Raft and Grounded, I can say Subnautica's atmosphere is just on another level. I recommend it over those titles if you want tension and wonder more than base-building for its own sake. The co-op addition also makes it easier to convince friends to jump in, since solo underwater survival can get lonely and stressful. If you liked the first Subnautica and want more of that world with other players, this is the one to watch.
Features
- Full co-op survival π - You can explore and build with friends in the same ocean, which the original never offered. It changes how you plan dives and share resources.
- Living ecosystem π¦ - Creatures now have their own behaviors, including hunting each other. Compared with Raft, where sharks are mostly a nuisance, this feels like a real food chain.
- Unreal Engine 5 visuals π - The lighting and water effects look far better than the original. Compared with Grounded's stylized look, this aims for a more immersive, realistic ocean.
- Bigger biomes πΊοΈ - The map is larger than the first game, with more vertical depth to explore. It rewards players who like getting lost and mapping things out themselves.
Pros
- Atmosphere that actually scares you π - The deeper biomes are genuinely tense, and that dread is something Raft and Grounded never quite match. It keeps you on edge in a good way.
- Co-op done right π€ - Playing with friends feels natural instead of tacked on. Compared with The Forest, where co-op can get chaotic, the shared exploration here feels purposeful.
- Strong exploration loop π§ - Scan, unlock, dive deeper. It's simple but addictive, and the sequel builds on a formula that already worked.
Cons
- No mobile version π΅ - If you only game on android, you're out of luck. There's no google play listing and no way to download it on a phone or tablet.
- Delayed launch β³ - The push to 2026 means fans waiting since the original have to keep waiting. Compared with Raft, which is already out and playable, this one asks for patience.
- Unknown early access scope π€ - We still don't know how much content ships at launch. The first game changed a lot during early access, and that uncertainty can frustrate players who want a finished app on day one.
