Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG developed by Sandfall Interactive, and it is one of the most striking games I have played in years. It is not a pure mobile game at all, so do not go looking for it on the Google Play Store or the App Store. You will not find a legit android version, and any download that claims to be one is fake. This is a PC and console title, available on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, and it even launched on Xbox Game Pass on day one. It first came out in April 2025, so it is still fairly new. On Steam it costs around 50 dollars, with a deluxe edition a bit higher, and there are cosmetic extras you can buy, but no ads at all. There are no in-app purchases in the mobile sense because there is no mobile app. If you install it on PC or console, you get the full game with no ads and no microtransaction spam, which honestly feels refreshing.

You play as a party of characters on a desperate mission to stop the Paintress, who each year paints a number and erases everyone of that age. The combat mixes classic turn-based battles with real-time dodge, parry, and counter inputs, so you are never just sitting there picking menu options. Exploration is done on a world map and in semi-open areas with secrets, side quests, and hidden bosses. The best part for me is the parry timing. Nailing a perfect parry on a boss that has been wrecking you feels incredible, and it keeps every fight tense. My favorite thing is just wandering the world and finding little stories tucked away, because the art direction and music pull you in hard. It plays great on PC, and it runs well on Xbox too, though I have heard the Switch version does not exist, so do not expect one.

Compared with other turn-based RPGs like Persona 5 or Final Fantasy, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stands out because it does not feel bloated. Persona 5 is amazing but the dungeons can drag, and some Final Fantasy entries get lost in their own systems. Here the pacing is tight, the story hits fast, and the real-time defense layer keeps you awake during every turn. I would recommend it over a lot of similar games because it respects your time while still giving you deep team building and gear choices. If you like RPGs and want something that feels fresh instead of another remake, this is the one to get.

Features

  • Parry-driven combat 🔥 You are not just selecting attacks; you read enemy animations and time your parries, so even normal fights stay engaging and skill-based.
  • Painterly art style 🎨 The world looks like a moving oil painting, and each area has its own mood, which makes exploring feel rewarding instead of repetitive.
  • Story that respects your time 📖 Compared with Persona 5, the main story moves faster and does not force you through endless filler, so you stay hooked from the first hours.

Pros

  • Fresh combat hook ⚔️ The mix of turn-based strategy and real-time defense feels new, and it beats the pure menu combat of many Final Fantasy entries for tension.
  • Strong art and music 🎵 The visuals and soundtrack carry the mood of every scene, and it is the kind of presentation that makes you stop and look around.
  • Fair pricing on PC and console 💰 For a full RPG at around 50 dollars with no ads or aggressive monetization, it gives you a lot of game for the money.

Cons

  • No mobile version 📵 If you only game on android and hoped to download it from Google Play, you are out of luck, and fake install links are a real risk.
  • Parry timing can frustrate 😤 Compared with slower RPGs like Persona 5, the real-time inputs punish you hard, and some players will struggle with the timing early on.
  • Performance hiccups on some PCs 🖥️ A few areas stutter on weaker hardware, so check your specs before you install it, especially if you are on an older laptop.
