I've been using Gopuff, a grocery, over-the-counter medicine, and snack delivery app, almost every week for the past few months. It first launched back in 2013, and you can grab it for free from both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. On Google Play, it has over 10 million installs. It's totally free to download and install the app, but you do need to create an account with your email or phone number to place an order. You don't have to pay a monthly subscription to use it, but there are fees for delivery and a small service charge. They also push in-app purchases pretty hard with suggested items. There are a ton of in-app ads for their "Gopuff Family" brand items, which are cheaper but not always what I'm looking for.
Using the Gopuff app is pretty straightforward. You open it up, and it shows you a list of categories like Groceries, Snacks, Drinks, Alcohol, and Home Essentials. You just tap on items to add them to your cart. What's cool is that they claim to deliver in minutes, and for me, it's usually around 15 to 20 minutes, never more than 30. A tip I've picked up is to order during off-peak hours, like late at night or early morning, because the delivery is faster. Also, if you have a membership called "Fam," you get free delivery on orders over a certain amount, which saves a lot of cash if you order often. You can also schedule deliveries in advance, which I use when I'm planning a party.
There are other similar apps out there, like DoorDash for groceries or Instacart. But I chose Gopuff because it feels more like a convenience store than a full supermarket. Unlike Instacart, which connects you to a real store like Target or Costco, Gopuff has its own warehouses. This means the inventory is consistent, and I don't have to worry about a shopper picking bad produce or swapping items without asking. Plus, Gopuff is open 24/7 in most cities, which is super handy for late-night cravings. The app is also simpler to navigate than Instacart, with less clutter. Overall, it's just a faster, more reliable experience for getting small stuff quickly.
Features
- 😀 Gopuff's main competitive edge against Instacart is its speed. Instacart can take one to two hours because it relies on a personal shopper going through a real store. Gopuff uses its own local fulfillment centers stocked with the most popular items. I've placed orders that arrived in under 15 minutes. It's perfect for when you need something right now, like a bag of ice or medicine for a headache.
- 😀 Another feature that makes Gopuff stand out is its curated selection. Unlike Uber Eats, which offers everything from a specific restaurant, or Amazon Fresh, which has too many choices, Gopuff focuses on the essentials you actually buy. They have a solid lineup of snacks, drinks, over-the-counter drugs, and baby items. You won't find 15 types of ketchup here, but you'll find the one you use. This makes the app easier to browse and order from quickly.
- 😀 Gopuff also has a membership program called "Fam" that beats Instacart's subscription. For a flat monthly fee, you get free delivery on every order. With Instacart, you still have to pay service fees and often tip the shopper. Gopuff's fees are lower overall, and the membership is way more affordable for frequent users like me. It's a simple win if you order a few times a month.
- 😀 Finally, Gopuff stands out because it handles alcohol delivery in most places where it's legal. Apps like DoorDash often restrict alcohol to certain time windows or require a separate delivery. Gopuff integrates it seamlessly into the main app. You can add a six-pack of beer with your pizza and chips, and get it all in one speedy delivery. That convenience is a big reason I stick with it.
Pros
- 👍 Gopuff's biggest strength is its unbelievable speed. When I'm sick and need medicine, or just craving a snack at 2 AM, Instacart and DoorDash can take ages. Gopuff delivers within minutes nearly every time. It's become my go-to lifesaver for instant needs.
- 👍 The app interface is very clean and simple. Compared to Instacart, which feels cluttered with coupons and ads for every store, Gopuff is just a straightforward list of what you need. I can find eggs, a Gatorade, and a phone charger in seconds because the categories are well organized.
- 👍 Gopuff offers free delivery a lot more often than its competitors. They run promos like "free delivery on your first three orders" all the time. Even without the Fam membership, I get free delivery codes pushed to my email regularly. That saves me a decent amount compared to paying DoorDash's delivery fee every time.
Cons
- 👎 A big weakness for Gopuff is its limited inventory. Compared to Instacart, where you can get a full week's worth of groceries from a store like Wegmans, Gopuff just doesn't have the variety. You won't find things like fresh meat, a full deli, or specialty baking ingredients. It's strictly for quick, small orders.
- 👎 The price markup is noticeable. Items on Gopuff are almost always a dollar or two more expensive than what you would pay at a regular store. If you shop Instacart at Target, you usually pay store prices. With Gopuff, you're paying a convenience premium for that speed. It adds up if you use it too often.
- 👎 Customer service can be frustrating. Sometimes my order arrives with a missing item or the wrong snack. With Instacart, you can chat with a shopper in real-time to fix issues. Gopuff's customer support is handled via a bot or email. It can take days to get a refund, which is really annoying when the app is supposed to be convenient.
- 👎 The selection of healthy food is poor. Gopuff is amazing for junk food, soda, and alcohol. But if you want something like a fresh salad kit, organic vegetables, or diet-specific items, you are out of luck. Apps like DoorDash have partnered with grocery stores that carry that stuff. Gopuff really leans into being a glorified convenience store, which isn't always what you need.
