I have been using Google Earth for years now, and it is honestly one of the most impressive apps I have on my phone. I first discovered it back in 2017 when I was planning a road trip, and I have been hooked ever since. It is available for free on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, and you do not need to register an account to use it. You can just download and install the app, and you are ready to explore. The number of installs on Google Play alone is over a billion, which shows how popular it really is. The app itself is free to download, though there are some in-app purchases for things like the “Pro” version if you want advanced measuring tools or GIS data imports. There are also occasional in-app ads, but they are not too intrusive and usually only appear when you are looking at certain satellite imagery layers.

Using the app is pretty straightforward. After you install it, you can either type in an address or just tap on the globe and zoom in. I love using the “I'm Feeling Lucky” button when I am bored because it teleports me to some random, stunning location. One tip I have is to use the 3D buildings layer, especially in cities like New York or Tokyo, because it makes everything look so much more realistic. Another thing I often do is save my favorite places with the “Save” button so I can quickly jump back to them later. I also use the measuring tool a lot, like when I was trying to figure out the distance between two hiking trails. It is really handy for planning trips or just satisfying my curiosity.

Compared to other mapping apps like Apple Maps or even Google Maps, Google Earth is in a league of its own. While Google Maps is great for navigation and finding a coffee shop, Google Earth is more about exploration and seeing the world from a bird's-eye view. I also tried an app called “Marble” once, but it was clunky and the interface was not as smooth. I stuck with Google Earth because the satellite imagery is just so sharp and it loads way faster than other similar apps I have tried. For me, the experience of spinning the globe and zooming into my old neighborhood is something that other apps just cannot replicate.

Unlike Google Maps, which focuses on getting you from point A to B, Google Earth's Voyager offers interactive guided tours from National Geographic and BBC. I have explored the Amazon rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef without leaving my couch. It feels like having a documentary built right into the app, and no other app on Google Play comes close to this level of educational content.
🛰️ The 3D terrain and building models are mind-blowing. When I zoom into the Alps or the Grand Canyon, the depth and shading make it look like I am hovering in a helicopter. I compared this with Apple Maps, which does have a decent flyover mode, but the rendering on Google Earth is way more detailed and covers far more regions globally. You can literally see the jagged peaks and valley floors.
📏 The built-in ruler and path tools are super precise. I use it to measure the length of my daily running route or to map out a new cycling path. Google Maps has a similar feature on the desktop, but on the mobile app, it is buried. Google Earth puts it right in the toolbar with a simple tap. I even used it to estimate the size of a plot of land my uncle wanted to sell, and it was spot on.

Pros

✨ The sheer amount of free satellite data is unmatched. Unlike apps like “MapQuest” or even “Bing Maps”, you get high-resolution images for almost the entire planet without paying a cent. I can zoom into my hometown in rural Scotland and see my neighbor's shed roof.
📱 The app runs smoothly even on my older Android phone. Other mapping apps tend to lag when you zoom in and out quickly, but Google Earth handles the graphics really well. It is optimized for mobile, so I do not experience crashes or freezes like I did with a similar app called “Earth 3D”.
🕹️ The “Measure” and “Historical Imagery” tools are game changers. I love sliding the historical imagery slider to see how my city has changed over the past 20 years. That is something you just cannot do in Google Maps or Waze, making this app a must-have for anyone who loves geography.

Cons

📶 The app is a massive storage hog. Even after you install it, the cached data for 3D models and imagery can eat up several gigabytes of space on your phone. I had to clear my cache twice just to free up room for photos. Apps like Google Maps are much lighter in comparison, so this is a real downside for people with older devices.
🔌 It drains your battery incredibly fast. When I use the 3D mode for more than ten minutes, my battery drops by almost 20%. A simple navigation app like Sygic or even the basic Google Maps view uses far less power. I always have to carry a charger if I plan to use it on the go.
❌ The search function is sometimes inaccurate. If I type in a local restaurant name, it often brings up the wrong location or just shows a blank spot. I found this is not an issue with “Here WeGo” or “Yandex Maps”, which have better integration with local business listings. It can be frustrating when you are trying to find a specific landmark.
